Wednesday, February 26, 6:30pm - South Portland Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture, “Clipper Ships,” in the Casco Bay room of the South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Road.
Seth Goldstein will discuss clipper ships, including those built along the shore of the city known today as South Portland. We know of at least four clippers built locally , including the Snow Squall. These ships are widely considered to be the fastest and most beautiful commercial sailing vessels ever constructed. Seth will share stories of sadistic captains and horrible storms amongst other topics related to these "greyhounds of the sea."
This lecture is free for current members of the South Portland Historical Society; $20 for non-members. A one-year membership is $25 and can be purchased at the door. Please arrive early if you plan to join or renew your membership at the event. Members who are renewing will speed the check-in process by bringing a check made out to South Portland Historical Society.
