There are five pillars of hip-hop: DJing, rhyme-saying, breakdancing, graffiti writing, and knowledge. Hip-hop culture emphasizes mentorship and education as a cultural value critical to realizing the shared goal of empowerment for all marginalized groups. While other elements of hip-hop culture permeated mainstream consciousness from its inception, the artform of graffiti did not make its way to Minnesota until the early 1980s. Since then, Minnesota graffiti writers have nurtured and sustained a community based on their dedication to creativity, style, and each other. From the black sketchbooks where they plan their pieces to their large-scale works both hidden and in plain sight, Minnesota graffiti is some of the best in the country. Beyond the blackbook is informed by previous and ongoing conversations with graffiti writers including Peyton Scott Russell (DAESK1), George Thompson (EWOK MSK HM), and SHOCK UC MSK.
Reception and refreshments, 6:00 p.m. with lecture to follow at 6:30 p.m.
