Public Lecture in the Rubenstein Arts Center, Film Theater:Duke Cinematic Arts is thrilled to present "At Ground Zero: 'To observe is not to see...'" - a talk by our new Assistant Professor of the Practice, Jenny Lion.
The presentation will introduce members of the Duke community, students and faculty alike, to the range of her research interests and her current body of video work, which explores sites of historic resonance in the U.S. West. Shot at military, settler, indigenous, nuclear, and industrial sites, it has recently garnered her a 2021 Creative Capital Award, a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2023 McKnight Media Art Fellowship. Originally a dancer and activist, Lion's video work is conceived for cinematic, participatory, tactical, and gallery contexts. She frequently collaborates, in groups and with individuals, and over long periods of time. Her moving-image and curatorial work has screened internationally, and her book on Canadian artists' video work was published by the University of Minnesota Press. She has been a resident at the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Studio Program and the Center for Land-Use Interpretation.
Lion's presentation will be followed by a short Q&A moderated by Cinematic Arts Associate Professor of the Practice, Josh Gibson.
