This lecture will uncover the science behind works of art, primarily paintings, through a materials science approach. Dr. Curtis Frank, professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University, will explain the steps in processing inorganic minerals and organic plants into solid particles, binding these together and to a substrate, and protecting both the particles and the polymeric binder from the degrading effects of ultraviolet light, heat, and moisture.
