Join artist and educator Jihan Thomas for fun, safe, and inspiring hands-on activities for youth and families during your visit to AAMP on second Saturdays. Held in our spacious auditorium, each drop-in Learning Through the Arts workshop is designed with visitor and staff safety in mind and will draw on the rich thematic content in our exhibitions.
The July 10th workshop complements the Museum’s current special exhibition Anna Russell Jones: The Art of Design, which highlights the diverse treasures of AAMP’s permanent collection. Anna Russell Jones (1902-1995) was the first African American graduate of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, now Moore College of Art and Design, and an alumna of the anatomy department of Howard Medical School, now Howard University College of Medicine. She was known to contemporaries as a talented artist, working in wallpaper and carpet design, as a civil service illustrator, and freelance artist.
While enlisted in the Army, Anna Russell Jones used her creativity to create posters, maps, and booklets. In this activity, guests will create their own booklets about their favorite things about Philadelphia, or their chosen community. We will learn elements of typography and illustration.
Advance registration is encouraged for this program. To reserve your space, please click the above button and purchase general museum admission for the 12 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. or 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. time slots on Saturday, July 10th. Due to COVID-19 restrictions issued by the City of Philadelphia, this program is limited to 20 guests. Guests will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing during their visit.
