About this Event
A market wallet was a very common bag used by both men and women throughout the 18th century in Europe and in the American Colonies. It consists of a long bag with an opening in the middle. Items are put in either end of the bag, the center of the bag is given a twist, then it is carried over one shoulder. Market wallets were easy to make and simple to use.
In our workshop, each participant will make a market wallet to take home. In the process, participants will learn to sew 5 basic hand-sewing stitches (running stitch, back stitch, spaced back stitch, whip stitch, and rolled hem stitch) and 2 types of seams (felled seam and French seam). The price of the class includes a kit with all the materials needed – a pre-cut piece of linen, pins, a needle, linen thread, a wax nib, and instructions.
This workshop is perfect for women, men, girls, and boys who want to learn to hand sew – a valuable life skill both today and in the past.
