About this Event
Beginning in 2026, the UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center, working alongside the Memory Cafe Alliance within Dementia Friendly America/USAging and community partners, will launch the Memory Cafe Expansion Project across Washington State. Through this initiative, we’ll offer free trainings for individuals and organizations interested in starting a Memory Cafe in their community.
What are Memory Cafes? Memory Cafes are free, informal, social gatherings for people living with dementia and their care partners. They typically take place in welcoming public spaces, such as restaurants, cafes, libraries, museums, and community centers. They are usually 1-2 hours long. Art, music, physical movement, volunteerism, and more are examples of activities that can take place at a Memory Café. Light refreshments may also be served.
Examples of a few current Memory Cafe locations in WA:
Frye Art Museum
Greenwood Senior Center
North Spokane Library
Tutta Bella Restaurant
Oak Harbor United Methodist Church
Why do we need Memory Cafes? Social engagement is an important part of well-being and supports brain health, yet many people living with dementia and caregivers experience social isolation. Memory Cafes are a way to find social engagement and connection! There are over 126,000 people living with dementia in Washington State and almost double the number of care partners providing support. Our goal is to see 100 new Memory Cafes open around Washington State. We’re thrilled to launch this statewide training initiative and expand access to Memory Cafes for communities throughout Washington.
