Doreen Overstreet, APR, Public Safety & Education Officer at the Seminole County Fire Department, and Carrie Proudfit, retired PIO, will candidly share their experiences with professional missteps and the valuable lessons they've learned. Every seasoned professional has a list of things they would have done differently. With a unique bond forged through years of collaboration, Doreen and Carrie bring a sense of trust and camaraderie to the conversation. About the Speakers
Doreen Overstreet, APR currently serves as the Seminole County Fire Department’s Public Safety Education and Information Officer. Prior to that, she was Assistant Manager of Communications at Orange County Government for worked throughout the COVID-19 epidemic and various emergencies under two Mayors. Before her tenure in government, Doreen, worked at Costa Communications for more than a decade and served as Vice President of Public Relations. Her clients included education, nonprofit, professional services and governmental agencies. She has been involved in PRSA and FPRA throughout the years and won dozens of awards, including statewide recognitions.
Doreen has more than 22 years of communications experience and is proud to have made a lot of mistakes (and also learned from them) along the way.
Carrie Proudfit is a retired Public Safety PIO with nearly 20 years on the front line of public information and media. With early roots in the Florida Department of Children and Families, Carrie first began her career as a child protective worker who was tapped to serve as their spokesperson. In her tenure, she's been an acting DCF state communication's director, worked for fire and local law enforcement and provided support to many other public safety branches. Prior to retirement, she led the Orange County Fire Rescue PIO team, where she and her colleagues managed a 24-hour press operation, as well as provided media support to emergency management during long term disasters.
Mid COVID, she retired to spend more time with her family and currently does freelance projects for Winter Park police and fire. She has a MA in Mass Media and is an advanced level PIO through FEMA. Carrie is a big proponent of mentoring others, as well as self-care for the PIO and PR professional.
