The European Union is currently facing direct geoeconomic and security tensions with major global powers, including China, the United States, and Russia. In this environment, economic policy has become an essential instrument of international competition, as economic interdependence and market power are increasingly used as political tools. As the global economic order undergoes significant transformation, the EU and its member states are seeking ways to utilise their economic influence to shape emerging global structures. This event will explore whether the European Union possesses the tools necessary to succeed in this increasingly complex environment.
Former Vice-President of the European Commission Věra Jourová will deliver the keynote lecture titled “Digital Sovereignty for the EU: New Frontiers of Political and Economic Competition.” Tomáš Petříček, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, will offer reflections on the role of European states amid ongoing geoeconomic turbulence. Researchers from the Horizon Europe consortium ENSURED and the Institute of International Relations Prague will further discuss key policy areas where EU economic policies intersect with global cooperation and competition, including trade, taxation, climate policy, and digital transformation.
The event will take place in English at the Institute of International Relations Prague (Nerudova 257/3, Prague 1) on 26 March 2026 at 15:00.
