Lead Awareness and Safety

If your home or building was built before 1978, it's assumed to have lead paint.

Join us for an immersive hands-on workshop dedicated to lead-paint awareness and mitigation techniques. Over two days, under the guidance of a skilled instructor, this workshop will explore lead awareness and the minimization of exposure while performing maintenance activities on your historic home or building.

The workshop instructor is Noel Sanchez, a restoration carpenter who is the president and founder of Casa Buena Builders. Sanchez has over thirty years of experience in the construction business, and his work has twice been recognized in the Rhody Awards for Historical Preservation. Sanchez is the lead instructor of PPS's Building Works program, which includes weekend and evening workshops as well as trades training intensives in the historic building trades.

Please note for this workshop: All lead work in Rhode Island is regulated and governed by the Rhode Island Department of Health Lead Rules and Regulations (RIDOH). This workshop is not a lead RRP certification program under the RIDOH lead training, certification, and licensing regulations nor is it a training under the RIDOH lead safe work practices regulations. A RI licensed lead inspector is the only official to determine lead safety. Renovation, Repair, and Painting work can only be performed by a Licensed Lead Renovation Firm. Providence Preservation Society cannot guarantee that the application of these techniques will result in a passed lead inspection or guarantee 100% personal lead safety.

Who Should Attend/Experience Level: Home or building renters or owners, preservation tradespeople, property managers, architects, and anyone interested in historic restoration and maintenance.

This workshop will run over two days: Saturday, November 15th, and Sunday, November 16th, from 8:30am - 4:30pm. Both days will have an hour lunch break with a total of 14 instructional hours.

Attire: Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you’re comfortable getting dirty in. Tools needed for this workshop include:

• Gloves
• N95 Masks
• Hand screw driver
• Hand Philips head screw driver
• Block plane
• Hammer
• Flat Pry Bar
• Utility knife
• Work apron

Other tools will be provided on site.

There is a large parking lot south of the house that is entered from Admiral Street, very close to the Dunkin' Donuts. This lot is located next to the playground and is about 500 feet from the house. To get to the house from the lot, walk to Admiral Street, take a right, and walk up until you see a break in the fencing at the side of the house. We will gather there.
