About this Event
Le Salon is Detroit’s new gathering for curious minds and spirited conversation. Each month, we invite local professors, artists, and community leaders to share fresh perspectives in a relaxed, after-hours setting in our new Borgman Room just off of the Apparatus Room.
Arrive early, grab a cocktail (or your drink of choice), and settle in for a 35–40 minute talk that’s as thought-provoking as it is approachable. Whether you’re a regular or just dropping by, Le Salon is your place to connect, unwind, and discover something new—no tickets, no pressure, just great ideas and good company.
Lecture title: ""From Sign Painter to Muralist: Detroit’s Own Dr. Hubert Massey""
About the lecture: Join muralist Dr. Hubert Massey for an overview of his amazing artistic journey, from his beginnings as a sign painter to his current status as Detroit’s most prolific public artist and civic storyteller. Massey’s works, which range from murals in fresco, tile and oil to monumental sculptures, include his massive 30 foot high fresco “Detroit: Crossroads of Innovation” in Detroit’s convention center. The talk will conclude with a question Q&A moderated by art historian Deborah Lubera Kawsky.
About the Lecturer: Hubert Massey is a Detroit-based muralist renowned for his large-scale buon fresco works that merge history, community, and culture. He studied under assistants of Diego Rivera to master fresco techniques, making him one of the few practicing artists in that tradition in the U.S. Massey’s public art appears across Michigan—from Detroit’s Atheneum Hotel to Campus Martius, Paradise Valley Park, and the Charles H. Wright Museum. He often collaborates with communities and centers his work in storytelling, aiming to uplift local voices through visual narratives.
