About this Event

You are invited to see for the first time “It’s just your Imagination” & “Drip” artworks in a more formal setting. It is going to be a wonderful event, where the whole building is being opened up for you to see the work exhibit.

Background : In June 2023 she was invited by Outer Spaces to have a studio in the empty Marks & Spencer shop in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. The opportunity transformed her working approach, painting large canvas on floor ( up to 7 meters ), these were bold and created engaging the whole body in the mark making. The series of artworks is entitled “It’s just your Imagination”. It was never a commission, so she could push the limits and have no limits.

Nicola had invited the Glasgow LDA Design office for a studio visit and it was during the visit that the seed was sowed to exhibit some of the work in their office.

In March 2024 she moved from Marks & Spencer to new studio space in a Call center in West Regent Street, Glasgow. Which marks the competition of “It’s just your Imagination” series.

About Artist:

Nicola Atkinson is an internationally acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist and designer whose career has been influenced by time spent on the West Coast of America, Sweden and living in Glasgow. Her dazzling public artwork specialises in place-making, social cohesion and community engagement and is displayed in museums and landscapes across Scotland, the USA, Cuba, Iceland and Europe.

Her interventions have always been both large and intimate in scale, have changed community identities and formed active relationships with the built environment. Never fixed to one place or a single institution, they provide the blueprint for new ideas in art-making.

In 2021, Nicola and her art studio Beautiful Materials exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the V&A Dundee. You can hear her talk on “Art Came in the Night”; a 2022 documentary on public art for BBC Radio 4, presented by artist Kevin Harman. “Memory Tree”, 2023, is an example of her public artwork. This memorial is crafted in Scotland using high-grade stainless steel and installed permanently in Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen designed by LDA Design.

In 2024 she worked in Winchburgh, Scotland Creative Identity Framework, coming up with a unique concept of Winchburgh Historic Portals, which act as a gateway and record that links to something bigger and more detailed. Designing artworks which have been installed at the three sheltered bus stops on Main Street. The bus stops were a perfect site for the artworks, as a very important link between the Winchburgh community and the surrounding area. They are bright on a dull day and fantastic on a sunny day.

Nicola’s clients include:

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, City of Nuremberg, Paisley Museum & Art Gallery, Long Beach Museum, Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, Lidköping, Sweden, Sustrans, Paths for All, the NHS, Transport Scotland, Scottish Government, Outer Spaces, LDA Design and many Local Authorities including Aberdeen City, Dundee, Dumfries & Galloway, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow City, Moray, Sandwell, Stirling and West Lothian.
