Free admission
Layers of Reality welcomes you to experience the natural world through the creative lens of artists. Their work explores colour, pattern and form as a threshold or doorway for the viewer to step into wonder; and a reminder that we too, are part of the great pattern of life.
Astrid Lans
Astrid Lans is a Swedish artist based in Cornwall who sees colour as organic technology and intelligence. Growing up in rural Sweden surrounded by nature and folklore, she developed a practice that blends traditional Swedish folk art with a deeply intuitive approach to colour and form.
Astrid's work invites viewers to slow down and turn inward. Her paintings—featuring themes like Queens, Dragons, and folkloric Kurbits motifs—are meant to create space for quiet reflection and reconnection with one's own inner wisdom. She sees each piece as a portal for transformation, offering gentle invitations to remember what we've forgotten about ourselves.
Mel Turner
Mel Turner is a Cornish based artist whose inspiration comes from nature and the beautiful creatures in this world.
Her love for art and animals is a way of being and stems all the way back to her childhood. After moving to Cornwall 18 years ago she learnt to surf, which gave her a strong love and connection to the ocean and the creatures in it. This evolved as a recurring theme and main inspiration in her work.
Currently her medium is stippling, creating value and shade dot by dot in black ink. Mel finds the process deeply relaxing and meditative. Mel also enjoys working in other mediums experimenting with whatever inspires her at the time.
Lydia Jane Duncan
Lydia is a printmaker, painter and surface pattern designer. She works from her open studio in the centre of the village of Hartland, where she draws inspiration from the stunning North Devon coastline and Flora and Fauna in the surrounding landscape. Lydia’s love of pattern was sparked whilst studying
Textiles and Surface Pattern at Bretton Hall, university of Leeds, after which the obsession to create nature inspired pattern took hold.
Using traditional and modern techniques, Lydia designs colourful wallpapers and printed textiles, in contrast to her landscape works and block prints.
Lydia likes to capture the magic of nature in the landscape, hinting at folklore- connecting the myths and legends of the past to the present day.
Rae Chi
Rae Chi is a Cornish based artist and Reiki Practitioner who is Inspired by nature and the creative force that underpins it. She studied Visual Arts at the Universty of Wales, and explores photographic methods, Jewellery making, Painting and mixed media. Rae Chi’s work is a celebration of the endless light, energy and beauty it brings to this life. Being born on the cusp of Sagittarius and Capricorn, she sees her work as a manifestation of living between two worlds. Rae chi’s paintings, and mixed media art emerge from this threshold -a meeting place where pattern dissolves into bloom, silence opens into song, and spirit flows into matter.
Angelique Medland
Angelique started her love of ceramics from an early age, going on to study at Falmouth and Plymouth collages of Art as a multi disciplinary artist in Ceramics, Illustration and Large scale metals. Over recent years she has focused her work around the concept of capturing the hidden character of the animals and birds she sculpts. She creates with the hope and intention that her pieces will bring realisation to the viewer, of the equality between us and other living creatures on the planet.
