In this class, we will discuss strategies for layering three primary types of water-based paints with one another.
Join Depo owner and Jules Webster for a fun and informative class that explains how to utilize the inherent transparency or opacity of various water-based paints to achieve a multidimensional look. How to mix all the products together to achieve custom blends will be demonstrated. We’ll also work with colored pencils to use on top of paint to achieve fine details.
Jules will explain: the difference between watercolor and gouache, how tubed vs. panned gouache and watercolor differ, viscocities of different acrylics and why viscocity matters, and how to touch up any type of paint with a colored pencil to add in fine details and variation.
After the demo, students will work from a still life of flowers or are welcome to bring in their own print outs of reference images if they’d like to work independently on their own projects.
All materials will be provided. If students have any favorite materials (paints, brushes, personal sketchbooks) they’d like to bring from home to experiment with alongside the instructors’ materials, they are welcome to do so.
Sample Schedule:
12:00 - 1:00: Show and Tell of instructor sketchbooks, demo on how to layer materials to best utilize the inherent characteristics of each paint. Brief brush demo, discussion of paper types suitable for techniques.
1:00 - 4:15: Open work time for students to complete one more finished painting or several smaller paintings. Jules to demo based upon individual student needs and progress.
4:15 - 4:30: Student show and tell, clean up.

Students should bring: A notebook or sketchbook for taking notes. Jules also suggests having a fully charged cell phone to take pictures during class. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and peanut free snack.
Arrangement shown in the photo is a sample. Flowers provided will be in-season and will look different.
Cancellation Policy: We will refund 50% for any cancellation made at least eight days before the class. After 8 days, we are unable to provide refunds for any reason, including illness. If you cannot attend after registration, you are welcome to gift your tuition to a friend at no charge. We do not transfer tuition from one class to another.
