On March 26th, 1792, a group of Groton citizens met in town with the idea of founding a school. That school has become Lawrence Academy, one of the oldest independent schools in the country. They articulated the purpose of the school by stating, “the happiness of the community requires the dissemination of knowledge and learning among all the classes of citizens.” This early statement of mission has evolved into Lawrence Academy’s current mission to “recognize you for who you are, inspire you to take responsibility for who you want to become, support you as you learn, and empower you to take action for the greater good.” Meeting onsite on what was known as “Academy Hill,” we will explore the throughlines from our historical grounding to our modern identity—a study of both a school in the town of Groton and the purpose of education to society.
