A welcome and long-awaited return to Colchester from a band built on velocity, volume, and a complete disregard for good taste.
Blending razor-sharp riffs with feral energy and a warped sense of humour, they occupy the space where thrash, hardcore, and punk collide—loud, fast, and unapologetic. Known for their blistering songs and chaotic live shows, Lawnmower Deth balance technical precision with sheer recklessness. Their music might be hard but never takes itself too seriously, pairing breakneck tempos and crushing guitars with lyrics that veer from satirical to political to outright absurd. Heavy punk with a grin. On stage, the band thrives on flying by the seats of their aged pants, and audience connection, in equal measure.
Lawnmower Deth were formed in Nottingham, England in 1987 by Chris Flint and Joseph Whitaker School mates Pete Lee, Steve Nesfield and Chris Parkes. They were later joined by Gavin ‘Paddy’ O’Malley after the band were introduced to him by the influential Sabbat as a second guitarist. He was later sacked following a show with NWOBHM legends Saxon and was replaced by Kevin Papworth (ex-Acid Reign).
Releases to date include: Mower Liberation Front (split album with Metal Duck) 1988 Ooh Crikey (Earache records) 1989 Kids In America EP (Earache records) 1990 Return of the Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns (Earache records) 1991 Billy (Earache records) 1993 2017 left the planet as amongst the festival appearances the band and Kim Wilde further strengthened their allegiance (having performed together at Download Festival) with the release of ‘FU Kristmas’, a joyous pop rock metal glory that not surprisingly given its lyrical content was banned by every radio station in Europe.
It is something which Wilde claims to be her proudest and yet most shameful moment but states ‘I couldn’t help it’.
2022 saw the band’s first studio album in 29 years. Produced by Chris Clancey (Machine Head / Overkill / These Wicked Rivers / Massive Wagons) and released on Cherry Red. The album, probably the most hardcore (and in time) release of the bands career saw it keep Iron Maiden and Metallica off the top of the charts. No one was more surprised than Lawnmower Deth (and possibly Iron Maiden).
Following the retirement of their founder Chris Flint / Mr. Flymo who finally hung up his sticks given his stage vomiting antics had reached an unprecedented level. Only LMD could lose a drummer through general inability and lack of fitness rather than musical differences. Undeterred, long-time friend Chris Billam of UK punk legends Consumed was quickly recruited. Something the band have come to regret given he is ‘young, fit, handsome and plays very fast and hard, it hurts!”. May God have mercy upon your souls.
LMD January 2026 PS. To date O’Malley has not been sacked again although a TBC date is always in the offing given his diabolical taste in jokes and inability to decide on what pre gig meal he should eat.
Support from Kids Metal sensations SLAY DUGGEE and Colchester grinders CHESTBURSTER.
