Lauren Schmidt presents her Distinguished Major Violin Recital on Saturday, March 26 at 3:30PM in Old Cabell Hall. The recital will be livestreamed at this link: She will perform an all-Hungarian program of works by Dohnányi, Bartók, and Kodály. She will be accompanied by pianist Jeremy Thompson for the Dohnányi, by cellist Chris Fox for the Kodály, and pianist John Mayhood for the Bartók.
Lauren is a fourth-year student double-majoring in Music in the Distinguished Majors Program and Chemistry with American Chemical Society Certification. She began playing the violin at age 9 and studied with Denise Chividian and Asya Meshberg before college.
Currently, Lauren performs with the Charlottesville Symphony, plays violin and viola in a handful of chamber groups, and studies with Professor Daniel Sender, the concertmaster of the Charlottesville Symphony. In July of last year, she was named the 2021 Distinguished Artist in Music, awarded by the UVA Arts Council. She is a Miller Arts Scholar and was the recipient of a 4th-Year Arts Award in March of 2021 to fund a year-long project in the arts. Lauren is also an active member of the UVA Student Council Arts Agency and serves as chair of the Charlottesville Symphony Players Committee.
After graduating, Lauren will be working at the Aspen Summer Music Festival as an Operations Assistant and will then be pursuing graduate studies in Arts Management. When not playing music, Lauren is an undergraduate researcher in an organometallic chemistry lab, works for the UVA Music Library as the student supervisor and the UVA Music Department as a promotions assistant, and enjoys hiking and playing with her cats.
This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.
