About this Event

P&T Knitwear is pleased to welcome Lauren Collins to celebrate and discuss her book, They Stole a City. In this groundbreaking history, Collins weaves together stories of four Wilmington, North Carolina, families over 125 years to create a full accounting of the long-term effects of the 1898 white supremacist massacre and coup and its critical role in subverting American democracy.

Lauren will be in conversation with Julian Lucas, and will sign books after the talk!

Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk starting closer to 7:00pm. Come early and grab a drink from the !

About the author:
Lauren Collins was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1980. She is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of When in French: Love in a Second Language, which The New York Times named one of its 100 Notable Books of 2016. She lives in Paris with her family.

About the moderator:
Julian Lucas is a staff writer at The New Yorker covering books, the arts, and the politics of history. His work for the magazine includes features on the excavation of slave ships and reënactments of the Underground Railroad; profiles of writers and artists such as Mati Diop, Cole Escola, Samuel R. Delany, and Ishmael Reed; and essays on intangible heritage, art restitution, and the exhibition of video games at museums. Previously, he was an associate editor at Cabinet. His writing has appeared in The New York Review of Books, Harper’s Magazine, Vanity Fair, Art in America, and the New York Times Book Review, where he was a contributing writer. In 2021, he was a finalist for the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle. He grew up in New Jersey and lives in Brooklyn.
