The crisis in Myanmar has had a profound impact on the country’s economy, with Myanmar overtaking Afghanistan as the world’s top opium producer in 2023.This new survey for 2024 explains how the situation has evolved amidst expanding insecurity and instability as opium cultivation stabilizes at historically high levels. UNDOC will provide an in-depth briefing on the situation and the findings of its new report: “Myanmar Opium Survey 2024: Cultivation, Production and Implications,” including an analytical outlook on the future trajectory for opium in the Golden Triangle region and what it means for the countries, the region and connected drug markets.
The 2024 survey is the latest in a series conducted by UNODC since 2002 to assess the scope of opium cultivation and opium production.
