The amazing geology collections cared for at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery are noted for their historic and scientific value. The collection holds approximately 600,000 specimens of rocks, minerals, and fossils along with other material such as maps. Join us for a tour of the stores on 19 April with Geology curator Deborah Hutchinson. We will explore the history of our forerunner the Bristol Institution, set up in 1823 with a museum largely founded on natural science, and in particular geology. The Institution was known for its marine reptile fossils and was the ‘birthplace’ of the plesiosaur. It also collected the Bristol dinosaur Thecodontosaurus.
On the tour we will look at the Bristol Institution fossils, early curators, collectors, and other stories from the geology collections.
How to join: the event is free but tickets should be booked in advance here: https://www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/bristol-museum-and-art-gallery/whats-on/late-lunch-talk-geology-at-bristol-museum-art-gallery-200-years-of-collecting
