For more than a quarter century, Last Train Home has been one of the most dynamic, fun, creative, and adventurous bands you'll ever hear, blending rock and country with bluegrass, swing, Tin Pan Alley, lush pop, and barrelhouse blues. Since its debut recording in 1997 right up through its 2023 release Everything Will Be, and its 2025 EP Used Songs For Sale, Last Train Home has followed a path unlike any other. With members in Nashville, Washington D.C., and Bucks County, PA, the band's live shows are more rare these days than they used to be, but the group continues to create powerful music together. With a new set of songs being recorded this fall, there could well be new music out by the time LTH returns to Richmond. After a concert in January, 2024, a reviewer on the americanahighways.org website wrote that LTH was “a full-tilt rock and soul revue, firing on all cylinders.”
The band worked through the pandemic on Everything Will Be, the stunning follow-up to 2020's stellar Daytime Highs and Overnight Lows release. Each band member recorded parts in their home studios for producer/mixer/wizard Jared Bartlett to wrangle into a cohesive whole. With the band's usual trademark horns, pedal steel, rich harmonies, and rhythmic invention, the record features seven originals by band leader Eric Brace, plus four deftly chosen covers.
Critics have found lots to like with Everything Will Be:
COUNTRY STANDARD TIME: "Brace and Last Train Home continue to be one of roots music's most enduring and inventive bands. This album proves it."
AMERICANA UK: "This is one of those albums where you play it and all the songs feel memorable and seem like old friends – and instinctively you’ll find yourself playing the whole album again, to fully realize the quality of the musicianship, songwriting and production. No higher praise."
ALAN CACKETT: "From delicate and mellow storytelling, through to more gritty tracks this album is an eclectic collation of 11 tracks, all deserving of wider exposure, but which wonderfully jigsaw together to form one outstanding masterpiece of sound."
FOLK ALLEY: "The new album showcases Eric Brace’s lyrical artistry and ingenuity and the band’s genius for creating layers of sound that evoke the melancholy or the unbridled joy of the songs."
AMERICANA HIGHWAYS: "As with all Last Train Home LPs the songs resonate, they’re well-articulated and performed. There’s little showboating, everything is filtered through a musical colander to refine each melody, each vocal, and present it to near perfection. As usual, expect the unexpected and be entertained."LONESOME HIGHWAY: "One thing that you can be certain of with a Last Train Home album is that a good time will be had by all. The musicians are of the highest calibre and with years of playing together, their spontaneity is clearly evident in the way in which they complement each other. A very worthy project and filled with great moments."
