Come have a drink with the people behind Milwaukee's least serious sailboat race.
Louie's Last Regatta started in 1999 at a bar in the Third Ward. Twenty-nine boats, $619 raised, and a group of guys who thought a riverfront bar with docks counted as a yacht club. It's raised more than $1.79 million for Children's Wisconsin since then, and it's the longest continuously running charity regatta on the Great Lakes. Boats still show up in costume.
Four weeks out from the 28th one, we're taking over the bar at Great Lakes Distillery. They're making a specialty cocktail with a portion of sales benefitting the event. Come find out why a sailboat race is named after a beer.
You don't need a boat and there's no cover. Bring somebody who's never heard of us.
Race day is Saturday, September 26 at South Shore Yacht Club. The shoreside party is free and open to anyone. Register a boat or learn more at louieslastregatta.org.
