Throughout history, Indigenous women have tattooed human skin to beautify, heal, empower, or carry the body into the afterlife. Emerging from the labor and creativity of these women, Indigenous visual languages – articulating identity and illuminating layered histories – have taken form and will endure as living traditions into the future. In a richly illustrated talk based on decades of field research and documentary film, anthropologist Dr. Lars Krutak explores the contributions of Indigenous women to the art and practice of tattooing. Although their achievements have remained largely unrecognized within anthropological and art historical discourse, he seeks to expose their work, revealing a skin-marking legacy that spans the millennia.
