Heavy Lifting: Building a Business With a Giant Heart
Can you run a successful business without compromising your values? Larry O’Toole, Founder of the award-winning Gentle Giant Moving Company, proves that you absolutely can.
Heavy Lifting: Building a Business With a Giant Heart is part leadership lesson, part memoir, and entirely inspirational.
Through the story of Gentle Giant, readers who are entrepreneurs or leaders at any level will learn how to
- Hire and develop people
- Foster a culture of enthusiastic teamwork
- Expand into new markets
- Hold true to their values, even when up against the toughest challenges
- Pay it forward
- Ensure that the best parts of their business and their leadership live on
Author Larry O’Toole moved to Boston, Massachusetts, from Ireland with his family when he was 15. He attended Northeastern University, where he developed a passion for rowing. Upon graduation, he pursued a career in engineering. His work experiences in manufacturing led him to realize he wanted to start his own business.
Larry founded Gentle Giant with a single business plan. “Only hire nice people with winning personalities and a strong work ethic, who are intelligent, physically fit, and have a passion for service.”
In other words, hire the kind of people you would relish spending a long, hard day working with. He likes to say that it was an experiment. Would that alone lead to success? It turns out that it did.
Moderator Ken Lizotte is the author of Walden for Hire: Business Lessons from Henry David Thoreau (HarperCollins Leadership) and CEO of emerson consulting group, inc. His firm has transformed over 450 business experts, professional service firms, private companies, and nonprofit organizations into “recognized thoughtleaders” since its founding in 1996. By helping his client thoughtleaders spread their ideas via books, articles, speaking engagements, and media presence, he empowers them to separate themselves and their firms from the “competitive pack.”
The author of eight previous books, Ken has also been a regular columnist for HuffPost, Money Inc., the American Management Association, and Boston Magazine.
A cofounder of the National Writers Union, graduate of Alan Weiss’s Million Dollar Consulting College, and an active national board member and chapter president of the Institute of Management Consulting, he resides in Concord, Massachusetts, with his family, a short three-mile run to Walden Pond and back again.
