Kick off the new year with the next installment of this special series, pairing music from one of the best jazz movie soundtracks along with an acclaimed movie!
Renowned Twin Cities jazz ensemble the Larry McDonough Quintet performs a jazz set from the award-winning 1942 film, Casablanca, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, followed by a screening of the iconic romantic drama. One of the best movies of all time, accompanied by a live performance of some of the best jazz compositions in movie history.
Filmed and set during World War II, Casablanca focuses on an American expatriate (Bogart) who must choose between his love for a woman (Bergman) and helping her husband (Paul Henreid), a Czechoslovak resistance leader, escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis. The supporting cast features Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson (who memorably performs the song “As Time Goes By” by Herman Hupfeld in the film). There is so much more great music, including “La Marseillaise,” “It Had to Be You,” “Shine,” “Avalon,” “Perfidia,” “The Very Thought of You,” “Knock on Wood,” “I'm Just Wild About Harry,” “Heaven Can Wait,” “Parlez-moi d'amour,” and “Love for Sale.” The acclaimed Larry McDonough Quintet will celebrate the music from Casablanca with a live set performing these iconic compositions.
Roger Ebert wrote in 1992: “Seeing the film over and over again, year after year, I find it never grows overfamiliar. It plays like a familiar musical album: the more I know it, the more I like it. The black-and-white cinematography has not aged as color would. The dialogue is so spare and cynical it has not grown old-fashioned. Much of the emotional effect of Casablanca is achieved by indirection. As we leave the theater, we are absolutely convinced that the only thing keeping the world from going crazy is the concerns of three little people who do, after all, amount to more than a hill of beans."
