Larkin At The Library: APoetry Writing Workshop

Lead by the library’s Dr. Anna Stevenson, and Beverley writer, Chris Sewart, this will be a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Philip Larkin’s world that will provide a diverse range of resources and prompts to inspire your creativity and get you writing.

This will be a poetry workshop in two parts:

Part 1:

‘Find old books here,

And new books, too.’

New Eyes Each Year

After an introduction to Larkin’s life as a librarian, Anna will take participants on a tour of the library’s Rare Books Room, 7th Floor Observatory, Philip Larkin’s Office and its Larkin Memorabilia – followed by a Q&A. This will be a fascinating and in-depth exploration of Larkin’s working world that is sure to fire your imagination.

Part 2:

‘To write you must be warm, fed, loved and sober.’ Philip Larkin.

Building on the rich resources discovered in part 1, Chris will dig deep into Larkin’s poetry, writing and outlook – including ‘the toad work’ – and use an exploration of Larkin’s work and style to develop prompts and plenty of writing exercises, that will guide you through crafting your own poems – and maybe even producing something Larkinesque!
