Large Language Models (i.e. ChatGPT, and LaMDA) and other Generative AI technologies (i.e. Stable Diffusion and Dall-E) are rapidly unfolding technologies that are likely to have major disruptive impacts on many facets of society as well as implications for environmental sustainability. Conversations about how we should manage these technologies on individual, organisational, industry sector, and societal levels, must be cross-disciplinary. ChatLLM23 brings together diverse voices to speak on the many aspects of how these technologies may unfold in the immediate, short-term, and medium-term future.

The topics covered in the day’s discussion will include:

  • Cultural inclusion/exclusion
  • Fairness
  • Accountability
  • Ethical considerations
  • Transparency
  • Alignment
  • Sustainability and environmental impacts
  • Impacts on society
  • RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback)
  • Future of work
  • Data overfitting
  • Bias detection and correction
  • Reflections of humanity
  • Legal challenges
  • Educational implications
  • Measurement validity
  • Generative AI and impacts on gender and sexuality identities.

ChatLLM23 brings together academics, doctoral researchers, industry developers, and policy-makers to discuss these and more topics around generative AI t(GAI) technologies.

Often, the conversation around the issues of LLMs and generative AI technologies is disjointed as research from disparate fields is presented at different conferences and through different academic outlets. There are still gaps between academia, government, and industry, and whilst much effort is being made to address these gaps, in the case of GAI we need to work faster and smarter to bridge these conversations. The media can be misinformed and AI hype-creep can derail the focus of areas that need critical attention. Sometimes, the conversation can be dominated by a small handful of voices which puts us at risk of losing valuable information from diverse corners. In order for the public to stay informed and for policymakers to best handle the deployment and regulation of these consequential technologies we must platform more cross-disciplinary conversations. ChatLLM23 is actively seeking to address these issues by providing a day for diverse, multi-disciplinary, and wide-ranging voices to be heard together and to listen to each other.

ChatLLM23 specifically addresses the calls in the Australian Government’s Artificial Intelligence Action Plan as well as warnings given at Davos by our Chief Scientist Cathy Foley.
