Holiday Lantern Tours at the Historical Museum
Every year in December, the Historical Museum opens the outdoor buildings for a weekend of living history during the annual Lantern Tours program. This year’s program will offer ten separate tours from Friday, December 13th to Sunday, December 15th.
Volunteer performers start weeks in advance and put in hours of practice leading up to the event. Ticket holders are led by lantern light through the Museum buildings and grounds and are encouraged to interact with a series of short skits-each representing a different year in history.
Lantern Tours are a fun and engaging way to learn more about how Missoulians celebrated the holiday season throughout time. This year’s skits feature the Grant-Higgins Family and the Hellgate chapel in the 1860s, a fireside outdoor scene with the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Paxson near the start of World War II, and some soldier shenanigans down on Front Street Christmas Eve 1882.
Tickets are on sale now and typically sell out for the weekend long event.

Sunday, December 15th –6:00 pm and 6:30 pm

This one-of-a-kind event is perfect for children (5+) and adults and will last for 1 to 1.5 hours.
The tour begins at the Museum’s Main Building located at 3400 Captain Rawn Way. There is outside walking, and not all buildings are heated, so guests are encouraged to dress for the weather. Immediately following the program, visitors will be welcomed back to the main museum building to enjoy complimentary cookies and cocoa.
