Language, Love, and Righteous Anger: Continuing the Struggle for Linguistic Justice

This workshop examines the intersection of language, identity, and the MLK Day theme. We explore the love of one's cultural and linguistic heritage, the righteous anger that can come from its suppression, and the struggle for justice required to make it visible and valued. Through the SPELL (Short-term Peer-led Enrichment Language Lessons) model, multilingual Bates College students will lead breakout language sessions. We will then facilitate a discussion on how affirming linguistic diversity is a powerful tool for building an anti-racist community and honoring the full humanity of every member, a core tenet of Dr. King's work. Participants will connect their own language experiences to Dr. King's visions about equality and belonging.

Presenters: Keiko Konoeda, Lecturer in Japanese; Md Shafin Jubayer ‘28, Dinara Kuatov ‘28; Jamie Shelton '27
