Unlock your creativity by creating a lively landscape with excellent composition. Express yourself using acrylic paint and a palette knife to create fun textures. With practical advice on colour mixing, techniques and exploring composition ideas, learners can develop the necessary skills to approach a painting using mark-making to achieve exciting and vibrant landscape painting.
You will be guided step-by-step in order to build your skills and confidence, focusing on subjects like composition and mark-making using rhythm, repetition and intuition:
- Get loose and explore exciting ways to apply the paint
- Enhance your paintings with palette knife technique
- Ensure pleasing composition with simple rules
- Add abstract elements to your work, such as varied brush marks and scribble writing
- Complete a landscape painting on canvas
- Protect your painting by varnishing it
Resources required:
- Acrylic paper/sketch pad
- A4 canvas
- White gesso
- A range of synthetic paint brushes
- Photo reference
- Metallic palette knife
- Acrylic paint (student grade)
- Red (Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red,
- Yellow (Lemon and Cadmiun Yellow),
- Blue (Ultramarine, and Cerulean),
- Magenta , Turquoise, Titanium white
The art materials are to be discussed during the first session of the course when the tutor will cover the topic.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required). As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
