Landing After Hours: Missouri's Female Sculptors of the 19th Century

The Missouri State Museum's "Landing After Hours" program, is held the first Wednesday every other month at the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site,100 Jefferson Street. Join us in-person or via Facebook Live.'
Doors open at 6:30 and the program starts at 7 p.m. Convenient parking is available in the lot next to the Lohman Building (100 Jefferson St.).
The program for October will be presented by Museum Interpreter and art historian Dr. Sarah Jones.
Our Missouri Capitol is surrounded by sculptures that symbolize and allegorize the characteristics of our state. Sculpture is one of the oldest forms of human expression. In the 1800’s, women were especially drawn to sculpture as their chosen art form. Two women from Missouri achieved success in this area: Lavinia “Vinnie” Ream and Bessie Potter Vonnoh. Both achieved “firsts” as women, both are recognized as significant American artists. Join us as Dr. Sarah S. Jones, Missouri State Museum’s resident art historian, to discuss the lives and work of these amazing Missouri artists.
