About this Event

"The light of the lamps illuminates the liminal space between silliness and reverence, community building and self exploration, and the differences that make us unique and the similarities that bring us together." - Lamplit Art Society

You've seen them around at local events and functions, these surreal and beautiful lamps decorating the oddest of spaces and sparking the silliest of conversations. Have you ever dreamed of becoming a Lamp Caretaker? Well this is your chance! We are so excited to partner with Lamplit Art Society to bring our community a full day intensive Lamp Workshop.

Saturday April 27th from 10am to 4pm we will be hosting a Lamp Conversion Workshop at the Community Art Hub located at 901 Kings St at the back of the Quadra Village Community Center: registration, an approved lamp, and a battery pack are required.

Making these beautiful lamps is more complicated than it may seem at first glance, so we must limit how many participants are able to join us for our workshop to make sure we are able to complete our lamp projects from start to finish. Advanced registration is required, with a maximum capacity of 12 participants for our full day of lamp making. Participants also need to supply their own lamp and battery pack that meets the Lamp Requirements.
Lamp Requirements:

  • All lamps need to have a translucent ceramic or frosted base, meaning when you flash your camera through the base the light is visible through the body of the lamp. Think of the vintage white lamps at your grandmother’s house. Fully transparent glass lamps are not ideal for light diffusion. Think of a milk jug, you need something to diffuse the light of the LEDs.
(Below is an image of a standard lamp demonstrating the body of the lamp that needs to be transluscent. )
  • Bottom of the body of the lamp needs to rest on a metal base that flares outward enough that we can easily drill holes into the base plate so the base LED wires can come out of the bottom.
  • Try and stick with small to medium sized lamps, large lamps can be cumbersome.
Battery pack required: any 20Ah battery pack is fine. 10Ah works too but often only get you like 4-6 hrs, but sometimes people prefer to have 2 small ones and swap them
  • All other LEDs, the 3D printed bulbs, and electronic components will be provided and are included in the workshop registration fee.

****Participants need to email a picture of their lamp to to have their lamp approved before arriving at the workshop. Not all lamps are created equal, and to make sure we are able to use our time the most efficiently we want to make sure we have the easiest lamps present for conversion.

The group will be instructed by Lamplit organizers who will guide us through this extensive conversion process. The workshop participants will be split in half. For the first half of the day, one group will work on wiring the 3D printed bulbs and lamp kits. The other half of the group will work on taking apart the vintage lamps in preparation for their LED inserts. When each group has accomplished their tasks, we will stop for a nutrition break and then the groups will switch so both groups are able to do both parts: the wiring and the decorating.

Please pack a lunch, it will be a full day. We are also within walking distance of Cafe Fantastico and Fairways market for our nutrition needs. There is a toaster oven, microwave and kettle available.

If you need supports to access the space or need more information, you can read all about our accessibility features on our website https://www.alterarts.ca/accessibility

We look forward to hosting you at our Community Art Hub located at the back of the Quadra Village Community Center. If you have any questions, please shoot us an email at [email protected]
