(Jacques Rivette, 1969, France, 250 minutes)Long one of the white whales of the French New Wave (which subcategory of cinema director Jacques Rivette has all but had a lock on until recently; see also Out 1: noli me tangere), L’amour fou is newly restored and finally ready to be seen by the waiting Webster Film Series audience, rabid fans of Rivette among us. In typical Rivette fashion, L’amour fou takes place amidst rehearsals for a play, in this case the tragedy Andromaque. The play’s lead actress (Rivette regular Bulle Ogier) stays focused on the task at hand while her romantic partner and play’s director takes to philandering.
