Lament to Liberation | Truth-telling on the road | Pilgrimage to Bristol
About this Event
The Pilgrimage
Whether you are interested in faith, local history, Black heritage, social justice, or simply discovering more about Bristol through a cultural lens, you are warmly invited to join us on this unique pilgrimage.
Guided by the historian Dr Edson Burton, you will explore stories that are too often overlooked and gain fresh insights into Bristol’s rich and diverse heritage. Through expert commentary and visits to significant sites, you will discover the connections between faith, migration, and community, and learn about the invaluable contribution that African, Caribbean, and Black Christians have made to the history and spiritual life of Bristol.
This promises to be a fascinating day of learning, reflection, and fellowship as we uncover the people, places, and stories that have helped shape the city we know today.

A coach will deliver participants to and from Bristol. The coach will pick up at two departure points: Fairfield Hall in Croydon and a stop near Southwark Cathedral.
Exact timings and locations will be communicated by email nearer the time, however expected departure from the first destination by coach will be at 7:30AM.
Food & Drink
St Agnes Church has generously offered to provide a selection for brunch for pilgrimage participants from approximately 11:15am. If participants would prefer to bring their own lunch, they are more than welcome to do so. Please share any dietary requirements at the point of purchasing a ticket.
Participants should be prepared for a relatively energetic afternoon on foot and are encouraged to bring water and any personal snacks they may need for the walking section of the day.
What to bring
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Weather-appropriate clothing (the pilgrimage takes place entirely outdoors after the morning at St Agnes)
• Water and personal snacks for the afternoon
• A journal or notebook if they wish to record reflections (a printed reflection handout will be provided)
Accessibility
The pilgrimage involves a substantial guided walk through central Bristol, covering approximately 2–3 miles on foot across the afternoon. Participants should wear comfortable, supportive footwear.
The walk is largely on level pavements and public spaces, though some cobbled sections should be expected around the historic harbour area.
We intend for this pilgrimage to be accessible to all. The coach is wheelchair accessible and step-free access will be arranged at both venues.
If you have any specific accessibility needs or concerns, please communicate these on the booking page.
