About this Event
Fakalofa lahi atu!
Dahlina Taueu is a contemporary Pasifika maker specialising in the preservation and practice of Niue weaving. Hailing proudly from the villages of Tamakautoga and Hakupu, her work is deeply rooted in her heritage and the rich visual language of Niuean customary practice. She is taught directly under her grandmother, Finemanogi who continues to mentor her in this traditional art form. Her practice is fundamentally one of cultural stewardship, which she extends through community engagement and workshops designed to keep the tradition vibrant and accessible to new generations.
Workshop description
In this session, you will learn to construct a Lili (wall hanging)—a large, circular disc that is
traditionally coiled from coconut midribs and bound with pandanus. We will practice this customary style using vibrant, durable plastic raffia instead of natural materials. This adaptation makes the technique accessible and turns the finished piece into an eye-catching, contemporary wall hanging.
Beginners: Start immediately on a ready-made matalili base. Focus on the binding pattern, ensuring you leave with a finished piece.
Challengers/Experienced Makers: Learn the crucial steps of starting the matalili from scratch!
