About the Exhibition:
Printmaking is a process in which a drawing is created on a matrix. The matrix could
range in materials such as wood, stone, or metal. Using a printing press, the matrix is
repeatedly passed through under great pressure to create multiple original prints.
Printmaking involves complicated pre-planning, problem solving, and a meditative
repetition that I find enjoyable. The steps taken to create every individual print involves
methodical and efficient procedures to develop a cohesive edition of images and ideas.
My meditative process is experienced in the rhythm of the carving, inking, and printing. I
become immersed in the movements, and all thoughts and distractions fall to the
wayside.
I find birds to be an interesting subject matter, we have connections to them in nature,
as icons, or perhaps spiritually. They are adaptable, clever, and powerful yet vulnerable.
I explore bird’s postures, gestures, and personalities through printmaking. This War
Birds series has been a way for me to reflect on confrontation and destruction. I explore
how narratives can change when a bird replaces a human. I think about what it means
to be violent or actively aggressive and ask my viewer to question what they are seeing
while presenting conflict from a neutral stance.
