Paul Newman stars as Fast Eddie a small-time pool hall hustler in this classic film from 1961, Jackie Gleason portrays Minnesota Fats, with Piper Laurie as Sarah, George C. Scott as Bert, and Myron McCormick as Charlie. A pool shark's travels from one seedy playing room to another lead him to a potentially life-changing showdown with the legendary Minnesota Fats. Set in the shady world of smoke-filled pool halls, this is a portrait of a damaged character who fears winning as much as losing.
The Hustler was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards; it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of billiards games. In 1997, the Library of Congress selected The Hustler for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The Academy Film Archive preserved The Hustler in 2003.
