About this Event

Join us on a carpool caravan adventure through the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive near Orlando. We intend on taking only four cars on this field trip because the Wildlife Drive road is narrow and often very congested.

This will be a great chance to see a lot of ducks including Fulvous Whistling-Ducks and Northern Harriers, as well as Black-necked Stilts, various gallinules and other waders. We might also see some meadowlarks!

We have two cars lined up and need two more drivers, so if you are willing to drive and take two - three Eventbrite-registered passengers in your car, please let Amy know at [email protected]. We will have walkie talkies for each of the cars so we can communicate with each other between stops on the drive.

Extra cars will not be welcome on this adventure because of the congestion they can cause, so if you are not interested in riding in a carpool, we suggest that you do a trip to Lake Apopka on your own.

We will meet at the Walmart Supercenter on Rte. 1 in St. Augustine to arrange the carpool at 6:00 AM in order to begin the trip at 6:15 AM. Since the Supercenter opens at 6:00 AM, you will have an opportunity to use a rest room before we leave.

It will take approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to arrive at the entrance to the Wildlife Drive where there is another restroom facility.

Expect to be gone until late afternoon (approximately 5:00 PM). The Wildlife Drive takes 4-5 hours to complete and we intend to drive over to the Lake Apopka North Shore McDonald Canal Boat Ramp after the drive.

Bring snacks, a lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, and anything else you might need for an extended day that will fit in the trunk of the driver’s car. Also, please offer to help your driver with gas money!
