LAFF 2026 Ed Alvarez Memorial
About this Event
Join us for an evening of remembrance as we celebrate the life and photography of Ed Alvarez (1967–2026), a beloved documentarian of the South Bronx whose work preserved the stories, resilience, and humanity of his community.
A first-generation Nuyorican photographer born and raised in the South Bronx, Alvarez began photographing in 2013, inspired by the neighborhood's rich cultural life and community traditions. His images document everyday moments, local celebrations, and the people who shaped the borough, creating an enduring visual record of a community he deeply loved. Through his photography, Alvarez honored the beauty, strength, and spirit of the South Bronx while ensuring its stories would not be forgotten.
A longtime friend, volunteer, and supporter of the Bronx Documentary Center, Alvarez was a member of the Bronx Photo League and a contributor to the Jerome Avenue Workers Project photobook and exhibition. Through these projects and countless hours spent documenting neighborhood life, he helped create a lasting visual record of the South Bronx and its people.
Friends, family, colleagues, and community members are invited to gather in his memory and celebrate his lasting legacy.
