Lafayette Church: Adaptive Reuse, Active Church Buffalo has long been a leader in the adaptive reuse movement: using a building for a different purpose than its original intent while keeping its architecture intact. In 2015 Lafayette Ave Presbyterian Church made history, being the only church in the nation to historically redevelop its building into 21 loft apartments and 9 commercial units while maintaining a congregation and providing a worship service in the same space. The Preservation League of New York State selected Lafayette Church and Lafayette Lofts to receive the Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. The League's statewide awards program honors notable achievements in retaining, promoting, and reusing New York State's irreplaceable architectural heritage. The Church, as well as its residential units still possess the Romanesque Revival style of the time it was constructed. Designed by Lansing & Beierl the church was constructed of Medina Sandstone protected by a red terracotta roof system and adorned with doors paneled in copper.
You are welcome to explore this cherished building, home to Lafayette Ave Presbyterian Church and The Lafayette Lofts. The Church’s Pastor, Jamie Owens, Church members, and Lofts' Event Coordinators will be onsite for the tour and available for questions.
Enter at the Elmwood Avenue entrance (next to the playground) to Lafayette Presbyterian Church at 875 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo NY 14222, at the corner of Elmwood & Lafayette Avenues. A lift is available at that entrance. Street parking is available on Lafayette and Elmwood Avenues - please do not use the small church parking lot, which is reserved for tenants of Lafayette Lofts.
