About this Event
Lady Windermere is giving a ball in honour of her birthday. She learns of a rumour that her husband is having an affair with a woman of “more than doubtful character”, a Mrs Erlynne. Horrified, she confronts him, and although he denies any romantic involvement, he insists that she invites this woman to her ball, because an invitation by Lady Windermere, a young woman of impeccable reputation, would redeem Mrs. Erlynne in the eyes of the world. The intrigue behind this seemingly straight-forward dilemma goes far deeper, however, than Lady Windermere would ever suspect.
Lady Windermere’s fan is one of Oscar Wilde’s four famous society comedies and a true masterpiece. With charm, wit and irony, he sketches the hypocrisy and the prejudices of London society within the Victorian era, especially in relation to the role of women. Simultaneously, he succeeds in posing fundamental questions which remain of vital importance until today: What does it mean to be a woman? Which societal pressure do women face in certain roles, as mothers, wives, as single women, …? And also: can one’s own principles be overcome? Are we truly able to revise our point of view?
The Day-Old Theatre, this time under the direction of Pia Klingenberg, is keen to present its enactment of this exceptional play and welcomes you to experience it with us.
