About this Event
Space Pirates Theatre Collective presents an immersive and intimate staging of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill by Lanie Robertson, which recreates one of Billie Holiday's final concerts before her death. Directed by Skye LaFontaine, this production brings audiences into the Zebra Room, a vibrant pop-up nightclub located inside East Hollywood's Historic Charlie Chaplin Studio, for an unforgettable night with Billie Holiday as she performs a career-spanning set interlaced with stories from her life as an artist and civil rights icon. Produced and scenic-designed by Ben Zingos, this project continues SPTC's mission of providing immersive theatrical experiences for our community at an affordable price, while still paying all artists an equal, living wage.
Casting and full creative team to be announced soon!
More about SPTC:
We operate by seven core tenets, all of which inform the following mission:
Space Pirates Theatre Collective is a new nonprofit theatre group dedicated to providing immersive theatrical experiences for the Los Angeles community at an affordable price, while at the same time paying our artists and crew an equal, living wage. Even further, we also give all artists and crew an equity stake in the success of each given production, based on time worked.
We stage new works by emerging playwrights, and also reimagine plays that have already been produced with our immersive design methodology, focusing on work that is contemporary and of the moment. In particular, we are committed to staging work that centers marginalized perspectives, while at the same time creating spaces for community engagement through the use of talkbacks led by social experts, community leaders, and creatives.
To read about us and our tenets in more detail, please see our website.
If the work we are doing speaks to you, and you have the financial means to pay more than the standard $10 admission we charge for the sake of accessibility, we would be honored have your donation and support. As a 501(c)(3) fiscally sponsored nonprofit project, any contribution made to us through our partner page on Omprakash is fully tax-deductible, and is immediately available for our organization to put towards making theatre for the Los Angeles community that is professional, equitable, sustainable, and accessible. Please visit our page to make a donation today!
And if you believe in us and the work we are doing, regardless of any additional contribution beyond buying a ticket, please spread the word about this production and our theatre collective, as 2026 will be our first full season, and we want as many members of our community as possible to share in the work we are doing, and to experience theatre as we believe it was intended: a transformative communal experience that transports us from one place to another and back, a journey of artist and audience together--as a collective.
