Labelling, law and trade workshop

Food and alcohol labels are a key point of communication for consumers. They can carry details about nutrition, health risks, and other vital information. As a result, effective labels play an important role in preventing cancer and other noncommunicable diseases.  

This in-person event for public health practitioners and researchers will explore different perspectives on effective alcohol and food labelling in Australia, including trade and international law and standards such as World Trade Organization law and Codex Alimentarius. 

Participants will hear from experts from Cancer Council Victoria, McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer and Food for Health Alliance. You’ll also have the opportunity to engage in interactive workshops and network with like-minded professionals working in public health, law and trade. Lunch will be provided.  

This event is delivered in association with the PHAA Commerce, Trade, Economy and Public Health Conference.

Learning outcomes

• Understand the role of labelling in public health and consider the role commercial determinants of health play in labelling
• Overview of the domestic food and alcohol policy landscapes
• Be introduced to and gain greater understanding of trade law concepts that are relevant to alcohol and food labelling
• Gain greater insight into the role of international standards such as Codex Alimentarius in developing domestic labelling policies
• Be encouraged to engage with and improve labelling policies in Australia
• Develop connections and join a network of collaboration on health, law and trade
