LA River Full Moon Nature Night Walk
Schedule
Sun Jan 12 2025 at 05:00 pm to 07:00 pm
UTC-08:00Location
Elysian Valley Gateway Park | Los Angeles, CA
About this Event
This hike is adapted for Los Angeles from a night program I used to teach kids in Yosemite National Park! Think of it like the sleep away summer camp program you wish you'd been able to do as a kid.
NEW 2025:
- A bat detector to "hear" and identify the ultrasonic sounds they make for echolocation!
- A telescope to get a close up view (and phone pic) of the full moon!
We'll explore our LA River local environment as the landscape shifts to night, learning about the ways in which both flora and fauna shift along with it. Learn about bats, night blooming flowers, owls, and other nocturnal creatures through engaging activities. Hiking through one of the LA River's best bat and night heron habitat, we'll also explore the ways in which our own eyes adjust (or don't) to darkness with a couple of fun games.
And of course, we'll learn about the LA River itself, it's past, present, and hopeful future. Including ways you can advocate to repair and rejuvinate nature in our urban ecosystem.
We will avoid using headlamps or any other light source as much as possible, but the full moon plus bike path lighting along the river will easily illuminate our path.
