LA Made Presents: Author Jeff Hobbs

Please join us as we welcome Jeff Hobbs, the critically acclaimed, award-winning author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace who will be discussing his newest book - Seeking Shelter a powerful portrayal of American homelessness that follows a single mother of six in Los Angeles courageously struggling to keep her family together and her children in school amidst the devastating housing crisis.

In the tradition of books like Evicted and Invisible Child, Jeff Hobbs masterfully explores America’s housing crisis through the real-life story of Evelyn, a full time waitress who is unable to afford legitimate housing or qualify for government aid, all the while she strives to provide stability, and college aspirations for her children as they sleep in motels and in her car, living in fear of both her ex and the nation’s largest child welfare agency.

Seeking Shelter is a powerful and urgent exploration of the issues of homelessness, poverty, and education in America

Moderating the discussion will be Carla Hall, an editorial writer with the LA Times.

Those attending the program will have an opportunity to take home a free copy of the Seeking Shelter book.

Jeff Hobbs is the author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He graduated with a BA in English language and literature from Yale in 2002, where he was awarded the Willets and Meeker prizes for his writing.

Carla Hall is an LA Times editorial board member who writes about homelessness, reproductive rights, popular culture, animal welfare, and human rights in Asia and Africa, among other topics. Before joining the board, she was a general assignment reporter for the Los Angeles Times’ California section.
