About this Event
La Longue Veille will be more of a social get together than our usual La Veil’ye to celebrate another year of joyous, folky nonsense. Please bring some food & drinks to share with everybody. We can enjoy the refreshments and finish off with a few tunes or people can play whilst people eat and chat.
In the 17th century, Jersey was producing 6,000 pairs of stockings a week to be exported to England. The long winter evenings, starting with L’Assise de Veille in the first week of September, the time when the most knitting was done. The knitters would gather round the fire sitting on the veille, an early type of sofa. Time would pass sharing songs, poems and stories as the fire crackled and cider was consumed. The most important veille was the La Longue Veille, the long sitting up, on the 23rd December. This was the deadline date to get all the stockings ready for the market on Christmas eve.
So, bring your knitting and join us for this wonderful tradition.
