Duration

1.5 Hours

What To Expect:

Visit one of the most beautiful places in America, La Jolla, California! This tour requires proper walking shoes and the ability to walk for 1.5 hours including some short uphill sections with stairs/steps.

San Diego's History

La Jolla became part of San Diego when it was officially declared a city in 1850. It was known as a beach resort by the 1890s when the San Diego, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Railway was built.

The tour will begin with a general overview of San Diego's History as we make our way to the first stop.

We'll talk about San Diego's early pioneers like William Heath Davis and Alonzo Horton who's vision helped shape the future of America's finest city.

Sunny Jim's Sea Cave

The gift shop/store was the original residence of Gustav Schultz who hired two Chinese laborers to dig a 144 stair tunnel from inside living area down to Sunny Jim's Sea Cave below the house. The trip down the tunnel to visit the cave is not part of this tour, however we will stop here for for anyone who wants to do it on their own. There is a $10 fee/waiver submitted to The Cave Store for each guest when we arrive. Those who opt out will be able to browse the gift shop or take photos outside as the others finish seeing the cave. (10-15 minutes)

Coast Walk Trail

The Coast Walk Trail in La Jolla is one of the most scenic and underrated walks in all of San Diego. We'll make our way up the coast taking in the extraordinary views to the north. See the Scripps Ecological Reserve and the Kayakers making their way to the sea caves from La Jolla Shores. Further to the north you'll see UCSD and the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course.

La Jolla Cove

After the Coast Walk Trail we will continue south along the coast and through Ellen Browning Scripps Park. We will learn how Ellen's contributions left an everlasting impression on La Jolla and helped put San Diego on the map. See La Jolla's amazing wildlife on full display including seals, sea lions, squirrels, pelicans, and cormorants.

Children's Pool La Jolla

Then we'll make our way to the Children's Pool, a small beach partially protected by a seawall. This is a popular viewing area for harbor seals and a very picturesque beach with a panoramic view.

Prospect Street / Downtown La Jolla

The tour will conclude with a walk up Prospect Street passing several important/historic buildings including the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla Historical Society Wisteria Cottage Museum, Grande Colonial Hotel and La Valencia Hotel.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, water, hat, and sunglasses are recommended when the weather is hot.

Difficulty

This walk is suitable for ages 10 and up. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The terrain includes flat pavement, some uphill sections, an optional 145 step stairway down to, and back up from the Sea Cave, and an easy unpaved walking trail for about a 0.5 miles of the Coast Walk Trail. Proper walking shoes are required.
