Save the date for the next event happening at La Esquina--the book release party for ÓYEME, the debut collection by Bronx Nuyorican poet and educator Jessica Diaz...on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25TH, at La Casa De Los Pueblos!Jessica will be in the house reading from the book...there will be copies on hand for sale, and she'll be signing your books and answering your questions.

-Atiba Kwabena Wilson and the @Befo Quotet
Founded in 2004, the Befo Quotet is a "Rhythm & Dues" band focusing on original and contemporary expressions of Afrikan music and spoken word developed in the U.S. and other regions of the Western Hemisphere. They'll be joining Jessica and the La Esquina open mic "in the tradition" of poetry and jazz collaboration and improvisation! If you are so moved, bring your poems and be ready to improvise with these genius storytellers and musicians: Atiba Kwabena Wilson (flute, vocals, percussion), Yoskiki Miura (guitar), William Dotts (bass), and Sean Brock (drums).
-2024-2025 Bronx Poet Laureate Kay Bell
A visionary poet, educator, and community leader, Kay Bell is the author of two poetry collections: CRY SWEAT BLEED WRITE and DIARY OF AN INTERCESSOR. She earned an MFA from The City College of New York, where she also works as an Adjunct Professor and Academic Advisor. When Kay isn’t teaching or writing, she can be found nurturing her plants and her two sons, in the heart of the South Bronx.
Ellen Hagan
Writer, performer, and educator Ellen Hagan is the head of the Poetry & Theatre Departments at the DreamYard Project. Her books include CROWNED, HEMISPHERE, and WATCH US RISE, a YA collaboration with Renée Watson. She has a new YA project forthcoming in 2025 with her partner David Flores. Ellen's poems and essays can be found in Oprah Magazine, ESPNW, So We Can Know: Writers of Color on Pregnancy, Loss, Abortion, and Birth (edited by Aracelis Girmay), Huizache, and She Walks in Beauty (edited by Caroline Kennedy).
Yariana Torres
...is a Bronx-based writer, with roots embedded in the vibrant tapestry of Dominican heritage. Her work focuses on identity, love, and culture, ultimately using her voice to illuminate the adolescent experience. She has worked with platforms such as the Dominican Writers Association, Dreamyard, Letras Latinas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more.
The open mic signup starts at 7, and we'll be going with the classic Bx playlists, hasta que nos boten! Bring your poems, bring your questions, bring your homies, bring your selves!
