Join us for 2 2-day showcase celebrating the creativity and talent of Latine artists through workshops, fashion, poetry, and music!

Day 1: (21+)

Will feature a selection of artists showcasing Fashion, Music, Art and a Market by Mexican Folk Art Collective. Be inspired by a fashion presentation by Julieta Zavala, whose designs blend cultural heritage with sustainability. Feel the power of words with a moving spoken word performance by Erika Latine, and immerse yourself in the colorful world of visual artist Jaqui Arte. The first night will close with live music from The Braided Janes, a queer, femme-fronted Latin alternative band making waves nationwide.


About the Artist:

The Braided Janes is a queer, fem-fronted, Latin alt band from Chicago. The trio was founded by family members Jessica “Museica” Rodriguez (vocals, guitar), wife JunyAlvarez (drums, percussion), and brother-in-law Andrew Doyle (bass, electric guitar). Bilingual and multicultural, their statement-making music has set them apart as “one of the best Latin alternative bands from Chicago ”by The Advocate and has achieved national attention from public institutions such as NPR which included the track, "Fuego" as one of their Best Latin AlternativeSongs of 2019and PBS who dedicated a segment to their participation in Tour Corazon Migrante

Gabriela Jiménez Marván is a Mexican folk artist from Cuernavaca, Morelos, specializing in cartonería, a traditional paper and paste technique she learned from a master artisan in Mexico. She holds degrees in graphic design, media design, and Mexican folk art. Passionate about education, she co-founded the Meztli Collective in 2016, using art to teach environmental concepts and cultural heritage. Since 2020, she has led the Mexican Folk Art Collective (MFA Collective), sharing her craft in Mexico and Wisconsin. She also co-founded the Driftless Region’s Día de Muertos Celebration, offering workshops in cartonería, piñatas, and papel picado.

Julieta Zavala is a Fashion Designer with 12 years of experience creating clothing and accessories taking in consideration her cultural roots and social trends. She specializes in projecting Mexican culture and costume design through visual art in fashion. Creativity, imagination, and perspective are her most essential skills in her design process. Her main goal is to reflect the artistic side of fashion using unconventional and recyclable materials for the creation of unique pieces. Julieta received her Associate Degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia and graduated in 2014.

Erika “with a K” is a Latine queer spoken word artist and poet born and raised on the southside of Chicago. They’ve performed in Spanish and English across the country at schools, universities, protests, open mics, and more using their performance pieces to move people to action that empowers, builds community, and centers our humanity.

Jaqui Almaguer is a self-taught Queer Chicana artist.Born in Chicago and raised in Chicago, Southern California, and Nashville. Her Mexican heritage and travels,throughout Mexico, the United States and Costa Rica,have greatly influenced her work. Almaguer is greatlyinspired by the bold imagery, bright colors and playful-ness of her Mexican culture. She has recently startedexploring new techniques and styles of painting anddifferent creative processes.
