X-Ray Research in Contact Improvisation
A Workshop with Liselotte Singer (France)
Sunday, February 19th
12-5pm
At Dance Home
522 Santa Monica Blvd
Description
In this workshop we will look at CI practice as occurring in a multi-layered space with its needs, rules and their potential subversion.
Starting from anatomical and poetic images of the body we will develop a practice of movement in precision and choice, but also in hyperstimulation. This will help us to reach a state of dance in which the rhythm of our gestures sometimes exceeds their intention and can sustain us in a light trance.
From the point of contact we will widen our attention to include the possible witnesses present surrounding a dance; the people on the edges, the objects and the space. I orient myself with these questions: how can we make a jam a space for sharing, where we address our direct and indirect partners? How can we encourage a space for individual and collective research in the practice? I will propose possible images to guide our movements, and I will encourage others to emerge.
The proposed tools and their combination emerge from ongoing research conducted at the intersection of CI, Yoga and Ideokinesis practice as well as my work as a dancer and choreographer. We will search together...

Bio
Liselotte Singer (France) works in the fields of somatic practices, improvisation and creation in contemporary dance. She now lives in Marseille. She graduated from the degree "Dance, Context, Choreography" in HZT, Berlin where she lived between 2012 and 2021, and is currently studying for a Master's degree in Dance at Université Paris 8.
After having worked for different choreographers based in Berlin as an assistant and per-former, she now wants to give back a main place to collective and collaborative practices in her artistic life, with a strong objective of sharing and transmitting also beyond the dance world. She focuses in particular on the development of a method of improvisation in movement in which touch with the hands is the fundamental element (HANDS IN).
When working alone she explores anatomical and psychosomatic knowledge that she continues to glean from all possible contexts, imaginary, scientific, theoretical and applied. She is as much about imploding her experience of body and perception as she is about finding a link between bodies and their representations. This practice functions as an undercurrent and feeds all her projects.
